Mazu Birthday 2026 on Meizhou Island

Mazu Birthday (妈祖诞辰) commemorates Lin Moniang's birth in 960 CE — making the 2026 observance the 1,066th anniversary. The lunar date is the 23rd day of the third lunar month; in 2026 this falls on Saturday, 9 May.

What happens on Meizhou Island:

  • Grand Sacrificial Rite (妈祖祭典) at the Ancestral Temple — scripture recitation, the Bayi eight-row ceremonial dance, and procession through the temple terraces. UNESCO-inscribed intangible heritage.
  • Procession to the sea with the Mazu palanquin — blessings for fishing boats and maritime safety.
  • Cross-Strait delegations — thousands of Taiwanese pilgrims, plus Southeast Asian diaspora groups. Some temples bring their own Mazu statues to "draw power" from the ancestral temple (fēn xiāng, 分香).
  • Folk performances, food stalls and Putian opera around the temple plaza across a 3–5 day window.

Practical: expect heavy crowds around the temple from 7–10 May. Book ferry tickets, island accommodation and Putian hotels at least 2 months ahead. Dress modestly; avoid getting between processional lines; 4 AM dawn rituals are public but quieter than the main-day ceremony. If you want the atmosphere without the squeeze, aim for 7 or 8 May.
