Nine-Bend Stream

The Nine-Bend Stream (九曲溪, Jiǔqū Xī) is Wuyishan's defining waterway: 9.5 km of emerald river curling nine times through Danxia peaks, each bend giving a different view. The stream is protected under UNESCO inscription and is navigable only by bamboo raft — no motors, no kayaks.

The classic experience is the downstream drift from Xingcun (Ninth Bend) to Wuyi Palace (First Bend), 1h40 at a pole-powered pace. Two boatmen per raft, six passengers, constant commentary covering the named peaks (Great King, Jade Maiden, etc.) and the cliff features overhead — including boat coffins wedged in limestone hollows and Song-dynasty rock inscriptions dating back to the 12th century.

Best bends by reputation: the Sixth Bend, directly beneath Tianyou Peak, is the signature overhead view. The Fourth and Fifth Bends (Jade Maiden Peak) are the most photographed. The Second Bend passes an Song-era calligraphy cliff that readers can actually spell out.

Practical: 150 CNY per person. Pre-book through wuyishan.com.cn or the WeChat mini-program — slots are capped and morning slots sell out fastest. Arrive 20 minutes early for the shuttle to the raft point. Skip if the water is high after typhoons (service suspends).
