Gulangyu Island

Place

Gulangyu (鼓浪屿) sits 700 metres off the southwest tip of Xiamen Island and is the single reason most first-time visitors come to Fujian. Small enough to walk across in 30 minutes, it holds more than a thousand villas in a dozen European and hybrid styles — the "International Architectural Museum" tag is well earned. No cars, no scooters; even bikes are restricted.

Core stops (half to full day):

  • Sunlight Rock (日光岩) — 15–20-minute climb to the island's highest point; 360° view of Xiamen, Gulangyu and the sea.
  • Shuzhuang Garden and the Piano Museum — Gulangyu's century-long piano tradition in an ocean-side garden.
  • Former foreign consulates and churches along Fujian Road and Longtou Road.
  • Catholic Church (天主堂) and Trinity Church — small, quiet, open to visitors.

Ferry (mandatory booking): regular day ferry from Dongdu Cruise Terminal (东渡邮轮中心) to Sanqiutian Wharf, 20 minutes, 35 CNY one-way. Book via the "Xiamen Ferry+" WeChat mini-program. Tourists may not use the Lundu ferry (that's for residents only during the day; both are available after 17:30). Arrive 30 minutes before departure.

Best rhythm: first ferry in the morning, climb Sunlight Rock before the crowds, lunch near Longtou Road, afternoon at Shuzhuang Garden, sunset and seafood back on Xiamen Island.
