Experience
This is the experience that defines a Fuzhou stay: a slow, uncurated walk through the Three Lanes and Seven Alleys, with just enough structure to keep you moving without a tour group.
Suggested route (≈3 hours):
- Start at Nanhou Street (南后街) near Dongjiekou. Pick up a small jasmine tea from one of the family tea shops — Fuzhou invented jasmine tea, and many shops will demonstrate the blending of fresh blossoms with green tea by hand.
- Turn into Langguan Lane (郎官巷) and visit the Yan Fu former residence — a quiet Qing-dynasty courtyard with a full translation programme.
- Cross to Guanglu Lane (光禄坊) via Wenru Lane, stopping at the Water Pavilion Theatre for a short Fuzhou Opera excerpt (check schedule at the gate).
- Finish at the Fujian Intangible Cultural Heritage Museum for bodiless lacquerware, Shoushan stone carving and cork painting.
- Dinner: fish balls at Yonghe Yuwan, or Buddha Jumps Over the Wall at Ju Chun Yuan (reserve ahead).
Best time: late afternoon into evening — the lanterns switch on at dusk. Avoid 10:00–14:00 on weekends in spring, when tour groups peak.
