Nanputuo Temple (南普陀寺) sits at the foot of Wulao Peak in southeastern Xiamen Island, shoulder-to-shoulder with Xiamen University. It's one of Fujian's most important active Buddhist monasteries and the most accessible: the main gate is a 5-minute walk from the Xiamen University metro (Line 1, Xiamen University Station Exit B).
The core compound runs uphill through three courtyards — the Heavenly Kings Hall, the Main Hall and the Great Compassion Hall — with the monks' quarters and the mountain trail behind. Many visitors pay a quick respect in the halls and then climb the stone path to the "Shi" (石, "rock") inscription halfway up Wulao Peak for a view back over the campus and the sea.
Practical: free entry; modest dress required (shoulders and knees covered). Open 08:00–17:30; busiest on weekend mornings. The temple's vegetarian restaurant (素菜馆) to the right of the main gate is well worth a meal — 60–120 CNY per head, excellent mock-meat cuisine. Combine easily with Xiamen University and Shapowei in one long afternoon.
