Shapowei (沙坡尾) was Xiamen's natural sheltered fishing harbour for centuries — literally "end of the sandy incline." The fishing fleet moved out in the 2010s, and what's left is one of China's most successfully repurposed dockside neighbourhoods: painted fishing boats still moored in the basin, warehouses converted to cafés and design studios, and a small but consistent live-music scene after dark.

Art West District (艺西区), on the west side of the basin, is the dense part — sculpture, ceramics, printmaking, small-batch fashion, and the kind of independent bookshops that actually stock the titles. Daxue Road (大学路), running along the northern edge, is the café spine: 15–20 specialty coffee shops in 600 metres, most opening late morning.

Shoot list for Xiamen citywalk posts: colourful boats against the warehouse wall, the "Art West" neon, the lookout at the basin's south end, murals along the north alleys. Golden hour 17:00–18:30.

Getting there: Metro Line 1 to Xiamen University Exit B, 10-minute walk. Easy to combine with Nanputuo Temple and Xiamen University in a single afternoon. Avoid 11:00–14:00 on weekends — too packed.
