Tianyou Peak (天游峰, "Roaming the Heavens") is the single most-climbed peak in the Wuyi scenic core, and the shot every Wuyishan brochure leads with: from the summit platform you look straight down onto the Sixth Bend of the Nine-Bend Stream, with rafts drifting past 200 metres below and Danxia peaks layered into the distance.
The climb: 410 metres of vertical via 800+ stone steps, mostly exposed. Budget 60–75 minutes up and 40 minutes down for an average pace. The stairs narrow near the top — go early (before 09:00) on weekends and holidays.
Two routes from the scenic-area shuttle stop:
- Main stair — direct, steep, spectacular. The Trail of Songs (一線天/一线天 nearby) is sometimes included as a short side-trip.
- Yunyao Pavilion route — longer and gentler; good if you want a 2.5-hour loop.
Combine with: Wuyi Palace at the base (15 minutes by shuttle), or the start of the Nine-Bend Stream raft if you book an afternoon slot. Bring water — the descent is where people cramp.
